Description
Between the small villages of Grafton and Alton Illinois, the Mississippi River sports a curtain of tall limestone bluffs, remnants of sediments laid down in the Paleozoic Age, 390 million years ago when all of this was a vast inland sea. Some of the cliffs are more 280 feet high, forming one of the most extensive river bluffs in Illinois, sixty five miles of rock. Quarries (now abandoned) were a major industry in the region. There's plenty to enjoy, Pere Marquette State Park, Indian mounds and museums honoring the 6 native American cultures who were common to the region. And then there's the river, the Mississippi, with Hannibal and Mark Twain legends just upstream. Grafton Is "Home of the Wintering Bald Eagles", and a stop over for Trumpeter Swans, and a great Audubon center which keeps track of all the nestings. Hoping to turn some of these photos into paintings!
