Description
Each year I wait for that magical moment when these lilies shoot up in one day or two to amazing tallness and then form this tight group which is just so special ...not at all like other lilies. They're gone now, but for two weeks or more, even through a few big storms...they were glorious.

Nancy Kane Chapman replied:
Each year big tall green leaves spring up and stand for weeks and then die. You pull them out (now limp and yellow) and then wait....for about a month or so. One day green shoots begin to emerge...tall and without leaves.. then buds then big,.pink lilies. That's the surprise!! And why they're called that. Really...it's quite a yearly event in my back yard.

F/L These are so lovely! Is "Surprise Lil" the name they go by? Beautiful!
Nancy Kane Chapman replied:
I just googled Surprise Lilies and there they were with some great suggestions for what to plant at their "feet"...quite a bit of info about them.

Lovely!

I was in LA when they popped up and got their first heavy soaking. Richard sent me a cell phone pic of a vase filled with those that fell. These were the leftovers...still quite a group...which greeted my return.

The rain really make this arrangement. Quite a downpour and we had to bring many of them into the house and into a bowl!!
