Fantastic expressive portrait Nancy! Bravo! fl

Thanks, Nikki. Sally Dubek taught a course in pastels and she was so nice to model for the class.

Wow Nancy K C, your abilities and diversity as an artist are simply amazing. I love this portrait of your art teacher. You certainly possess that "Midas touch"....gold to you my dear...L/V

Thanks, Dave. I certainly tried my "hand" at all of the art venues. And I loved and love them all. I never did settle into one style so my body of work looks like a tribe of people did it. Not even related to one another!!!

Great pastel portrait, Nancy! L/F

Thanks so much. Actually portraits were the road not taken. I certainly loved doing them, but didn't really specialize and get serious.

I have missed visiting your gallery these past weeks. I hope to be back looking a little bit soon....lovely feel to this one! Love your composition...makes it feel so intimate...she seems weary, or am I projecting?? wonderful work!...fav/l10

She was my art teacher and we took a class in her beautiful studio in an old mill by the stream in Wisconsin. Did I tell you we lived in Milwaukee (my husband, Richard's home town for seven years). And it was a long pose and she was thinking I'm certain. She was a really good artist and this was my first pastel class.

Hello Sally, such a great portrait Nancy, a moment of quiet respite and contemplation! Beautifully expressed! fv

I took a class from a wonderful teacher and she was Sally. She posed for us. It was pastel and what a joy it was to try this medium.

James Huntley

James Huntley

beautiful reflective pose...love the way you captured the hand.

If I could force myself, I would love to spend more time doing portraits and figure drawings. Pastels (which my mother loved) are amazing and I have barely explored them.

Wish I could get back to this mood. My daughter wants me to paint her portrait!!! Thanks for the comment.

Nancy, Love this pastel. This reminds me of a lady named Sally who was in our art group. She moved away and I don't know how to contact her..... Sometimes people just disappear from our lives. I miss her. In any case, I love your artwork. I hope YOU don't disappear. You have already brightened up my life by your fine art and your kind comments. F/V

That's why this site is so nice. I too have had many classes and lots of nice art pals who are gone. It's always fun to see what you are painting next....hope I can keep up....!

Thanks so much Ana. I really didn't do too many pastels and I should try again.

Sally was actually my artist teacher and she posed for us to learn pastel. But who knows the real story?

Sarah Chapman

love the expression and shading of the hand and face in contrast to the wrist. Really adds to the reflective, tired, somber ?? mood. Could be so many moods. Very thought/story provoking. Definitely leaves the viewer intrigued!

About Nancy Kane Chapman

Nancy Kane Chapman

I began my love for art by watching my mother paint in oils and pastels. I must have caught the bug because I have enjoyed fifty years of drawing, painting and photography, urged on and instructed by professors, a botanist, a master of Chinese brush painting and calligraphy, water colorists and lately, mixed media devotees. After a course in cubism in 1973 I began to explore pen and ink geometric art. Each stroke was unplanned but exact, the designs becoming more elaborate and more fun to execute. First circles, then onward to straight lines, then organic and architectural constructions. Thirty years later I still dance out on the white space of a simple sheet of paper to weave new drawings. Picasa effects allow me to...
