About Nancy Kane Chapman
I began my love for art by watching my mother paint in oils and pastels. I must have caught the bug because I have enjoyed fifty years of drawing, painting and photography, urged on and instructed by professors, a botanist, a master of Chinese brush painting and calligraphy, water colorists and lately, mixed media devotees. After a course in cubism in 1973 I began to explore pen and ink geometric art. Each stroke was unplanned but exact, the designs becoming more elaborate and more fun to execute. First circles, then onward to straight lines, then organic and architectural constructions. Thirty years later I still dance out on the white space of a simple sheet of paper to weave new drawings. Love the elegance of your Magnolia paintings!
Nancy Kane Chapman replied:
Watercolor was my first love....and these were painted from the flower in front of me...never from a photograph. And the perfume...a wonderful experience!

Nancy, this is stunning work! I love the movement of the magnolia blossom; the portrait of this floral beauty is poetic. I love it! l/f
Nancy Kane Chapman replied:
I had taken two courses in botanical art at the LA Arboretum...my instructor was an ex Forest Ranger and a botanist...a petite feisty woman....quite exceptional. She certainly inspired us!

Spectacular Nancy! I love the movement and dance you have conveyed in this lovely magnolia... she's showing us a bow, if you will. I love it!
Nancy Kane Chapman replied:
It was so nice to read your biography and know that you are a dancer. I took lessons from age 3 and was briefly on toe in high school. Never very good at it, mind you, but I know that it has made a difference in my painting skills and my heart. I read that in your art as well!
Nancy Kane Chapman replied:
Well, no...not age 3....more like age 5. I remember the little recitals and the wonderful costumes! Also tap dancing!!
Marcia Lee Jones
Beautifully painted! v/f
Nancy Kane Chapman replied:
Thanks so much, Marcia. I always thought I should have tried for an exhibit of these, but so far I haven't. I'm thinking about making them a nice box of cards though. !!

Thank you, Jane for your comment. I was taking a course from a botanist and I did keep straying off the path of exactitude and felt, like you noticed, that the flowers had personalities. And maybe I put my own moods into them, too. I have so enjoyed your paintings.
Jane Small
Hello Nancy ! How lovely to find an entire gallery of magnolia blooms! It would be so hard to pick a favourite, but this one would rank very high! It is a joy to view the care and sensitivity with which you paint each bloom or bud, giving each a unique mood and individuality. I'm thinking of maybe having an FAA break for a while, but when I am around, definitely I will enjoy to visit your beautiful paintings. v/f
