"The Night City" by Nancy Kane Chapman is my abstraction of big cities, especially New York, but all of the big ones have this wonderful flavor, this compact mass of energy, these tall structures that cry to be painted.
I began my love for art by watching my mother paint in oils and pastels. I must have caught the bug because I have enjoyed fifty years of drawing, painting and photography, urged on and instructed by professors, a botanist, a master of Chinese brush painting and calligraphy, water colorists and lately, mixed media devotees. After a course in cubism in 1973 I began to explore pen and ink geometric art. Each stroke was unplanned but exact, the designs becoming more elaborate and more fun to execute. First circles, then onward to straight lines, then organic and architectural constructions. Thirty years later I still dance out on the white space of a simple sheet of paper to weave new drawings. Picasa effects allow me to...

Wow Nancy, the different tones and light in this exceptional work is outstanding! I went to an Art-Hop in Lodi the other night and the featured artist was using bits of gold leaf in her abstracts and I can see how that could be used here (though this is absolutely exquisite).....so much energy in this!!!
Nancy Kane Chapman replied:
I've worked with metallics and I have them handy in watercolor, acrylic, gouache and ink...plus a Sharpie full of poster paint in gold. . I should try them on ...the city! Thanks, Joyce. (I have never tried gold leaf.. that would be really good.)

I am not an expert on modern art. So forgive me. But can I tell you my thoughts as I gazed at this the first time? I saw the history of the city in layers, some remaining and others no longer there. My family history is tied up with NYC and so it struck me in a deep place. L/F
Nancy Kane Chapman replied:
I agree that there seems to be history here. My family has ties here too and I've spent lots of time in the city. But does that explain that the ship on the river looks like it's from another period? Or that the waterfront is different, and some buildings look very antique etc. Interesting how this could have happened. I did not paint from a photo...simply imagination.
