I had the good fortune to take pastel classes in an old mill in Grafton, Wisconsin.
This is a quite large pastel I painted on scene.
I began my love for art by watching my mother paint in oils and pastels. I must have caught the bug because I have enjoyed fifty years of drawing, painting and photography, urged on and instructed by professors, a botanist, a master of Chinese brush painting and calligraphy, water colorists and lately, mixed media devotees. After a course in cubism in 1973 I began to explore pen and ink geometric art. Each stroke was unplanned but exact, the designs becoming more elaborate and more fun to execute. First circles, then onward to straight lines, then organic and architectural constructions. Thirty years later I still dance out on the white space of a simple sheet of paper to weave new drawings. Many thanks, Stefano for featuring The Studio in 10 Plus. One of my favorite paintings, this one in pastel chalk.

This is such a wonderful painting, Nancy.......great composition, color and I love all the details here! I am tempted to take out my pastels too! L/f/pinned.

My "toys" are plentiful....my brushes await me....and now I'm playing digital games...just made a giant Mediterranean ancient sea port inspired by an exhibit of Egypt's sunken cities at our museum of art. It's like a Klee cartoon!
R W Goetting
This is really fine work Nancy. The lines and angles that energize this are awesome. Great use of limited color too. LF!
Nancy Kane Chapman replied:
Many thanks, Bob. I need to revisit my pastels....I still have my mother's set and several of my own purchases. Lots of equipment....even the paper!!! Spring would be a good time to get busy!
Studio Tolere
I have to go further on second look. This is masterful!

Really well done Nancy. You have taken a diffuse space and made it full of definition and intimacy , something I personally know is a real accomplishment.I cannot do this.I love the use of pastel and limited color rangel/f

So happy you found my studio pastel. I had so much fun in this class and left with a feeling of accomplishment. I have had a series of wonderful artists who have inspired me, convinced me I could "do it" and I did.
Sherri Of Palm Springs
How wonderful Nancy, love it my friend Sherri fl-FB
Nancy Kane Chapman replied:
Thanks for posting this, Sherri. I've been so busy with my geometry I forgot I could actually paint with pastel chalk and draw people!!

Next, because I still have it, I'll post the portrait I did of my teacher....very Klimt. Thanks, Bill!

This was the top floor of an historic old mill. Outside, of course...the stream, the waterfall....everything about it made for art!

Thanks for this visit....to a pastel from my past. I had quite a few good teachers and I seemed to gather focus from other artists and I was always the student.

This is so well done Nancy and I love that you have changed the model to yourself instead of your teacher - so appropriate that you gave it to her...I love all the detail included, an that includes the fish up near the rafters. I love the warm, and just the right amount of light; I think you did a marvelous job here! "-))
Nancy Kane Chapman replied:
I like that fish too! Actually the space was amazing as was the little town and old mill. Love all of your compliments! Thanks so much.
Felix Lai

F/L Your "grande finale" is stunning! I am sorry you gave it away, but you have a picture it. I had to laugh at you changing the teacher's fave to your own - my kind of move!!! Do you ever get a hankering to pick up the pastels again?
Nancy Kane Chapman replied:
I guess I figured that I'd do so many more of these....but not so. There are always choices to be made in art and I'm not certain even now about which direction to travel. I still have chalk and even oil pastels....Love all of the art toys!!
