An imaginary view of Shangrila, the land depicted in the novel "Lost Horizon" (l933) by James Hilton described in the dictionary as a place where life approaches perfection. I began my love for art by watching my mother paint in oils and pastels. I must have caught the bug because I have enjoyed fifty years of drawing, painting and photography, urged on and instructed by professors, a botanist, a master of Chinese brush painting and calligraphy, water colorists and lately, mixed media devotees. After a course in cubism in 1973 I began to explore pen and ink geometric art. Each stroke was unplanned but exact, the designs becoming more elaborate and more fun to execute. First circles, then onward to straight lines, then organic and architectural constructions. Thirty years later I still dance out on the white space of a simple sheet of paper to weave new drawings. Picasa effects allow me to...

How nice to see "Shangrila Housing" featured in WHAT Interrobang 1. It's a first for me...to paint paradise with urban concerns! Very fun and I'm appreciative that you have chosen my whimsical take on it. Thanks, Jim.

Thanks again for your good words, Bill. I do now have quite a bad back from sitting too long in the trance of the computer. May have to take a bit of a chiropractic holiday.

Beautiful in all ways and definitely feels futuristic!! v/f!!
Nancy Kane Chapman replied:
Such a new venture, this digital world....and after years of doing very tight pen and ink geometric drawing, its lovely to push around whole clumps of pattern. Building landscapes and even...people!

Wonderful work.
Nancy Kane Chapman replied:
Thanks so much, Georgia. I've found this program for cloning and making patterns and it's a fascinating journey into digital art.

Nancy, thank you for your reply. Yes, I recognized it as Tibet, and I love your mention of the 'extra housing'! I am going to share this painting (and your environmental awareness collection) with the class working on the Ideal City project!
Nancy Kane Chapman replied:
This is such exciting news, Elizabeth. I have never really sought an outlet for my environmental art and I've worried that I should have organized something so it could be useful. I'd be so glad to hear what response they have! Thank you!
Elizabeth Tillar
Nancy, I love this ideal city! (My students are working on a final project on the subject of the 'ideal city' in a course called Ultimate Questions!). This is a beautiful, incredibly impressive, detailed painting that reminds me of all that I love about Tibet! Extraordinary work! l/f
Nancy Kane Chapman replied:
It is Tibet...but I've engineered extra housing for the many devotees. It's really a bit of a pun...like we might ruin all utopia if too many of us get there!! Silly me. Thanks for your lovely comment.
