leave it alone. The forward green leaf was one I liked. Magnolia leaves are rich in dark greens which can make the portraits look like they are sitting on velvet. So fun to paint!
I began my love for art by watching my mother paint in oils and pastels. I must have caught the bug because I have enjoyed fifty years of drawing, painting and photography, urged on and instructed by professors, a botanist, a master of Chinese brush painting and calligraphy, water colorists and lately, mixed media devotees. After a course in cubism in 1973 I began to explore pen and ink geometric art. Each stroke was unplanned but exact, the designs becoming more elaborate and more fun to execute. First circles, then onward to straight lines, then organic and architectural constructions. Thirty years later I still dance out on the white space of a simple sheet of paper to weave new drawings. We have these big beautiful magnolias in our neighborhood here in St. Louis, so I don't lack for models. My painting style has definitely changed....this was the very classical watercolor botanical....and I spent several years at it! And then I learned Chinese brush painting.....!!!

So nice to have this comment, Laurie. I followed a botanical art course with several years painting magnolias. We lived in Pasadena then and the streets were lined with flowering trees! I would select one bloom, bring it home and the magic would begin!
