Title
Magnolia Highlight
Artist
Nancy Kane Chapman
Medium
Painting - Watercolor
Description
I took botanical art lessons from a botanist at the Los Angeles Arboretum.
What a joy to approach each bloom and try to produce a portrait, each one
different. Magnolias are ancient flowers, known as fossil flowers. They have been found in deposits dating back to the time of dinosaurs which would place them between 144 and 65 million years ago.

Just gorgeous, Nancy! It can be difficult to paint with white. LF and a fave!
Nancy Kane Chapman replied:
I still remember the excitement I had in front of each of these magnolias, perched in water in front of me, slowing opening with the heat from the room. .... the challenge, the fun of trying to "catch" the. beauty and structure. each one of these paintings different....separated by weeks and sometimes years. The wonderful aromas......goodness. I was such an artist in those years.

I'm so happy you wandered over to my magnolia gallery. I just fell in love with these flowers. There were so many magnolia trees in Pasadena and I always painted from a fresh one with its beautiful perfume filling the air. It was a very exciting time in my art "life".

don't know how I missed this collection, Nancy....stunning! Your treatment of this magnificent bloom is just right.....I can even catch their aroma!
Nancy Kane Chapman replied:
So glad you found them! I really enjoyed each portrait. And none were painted from a photograph so it was quite an experience to try to catch the shapes and shadows as the flower continued to open.
